This course is aimed at building and enriching students’ vocabulary. A rich vocabulary will lead to an effective language use to express a variety of intentions such as ideas, thoughts, and emotions. In addition to that, vocabulary knowledge and development correlate positively with success in reading comprehension and fluency. By the end of this course, students are expected to master up to 3000 high-frequency words. The topics to be covered are word structure, word ending, phrase building and words related to some topics such as people, job, sport, leisure, and daily life. The activities include developing a rich vocabulary through understanding various words groups, keeping a record of words, also using dictionary and thesaurus. The assessment is based on students’ vocabulary threshold, class participation, mid-term and final examinations. While individual performances are noted, pair and group works should be encouraged.
